It is great to see that both Marcus and Peter have had eventful careers.
I enjoyed reading your contributions to the site.I have seen "Death of

Peter, well done. As I recall, Marcus wanted to be a journalist from form

However have spoken with W'spoons and they can fit in a further one or
two so if you wish to attend please call me either at home on 01246 - 414923
or e-mail me. The cost is £12.50 which includes
a two course traditional Xmas Fayre Menu, plus a glass or two to drink,
coffee & a tip for the staff.Last year's do was highly successful,
hence the reason everyone who attended have re-booked for this year's bash. The
entrance to Wetherspoons is right opposite the top side entrance to John
Lewis's or as we all know it, Cole Bros., in Cambridge Street.Payment in
full is required when booking to avoid having to sort out loads of cash
on the day. Waiting to hear from anyone who is still interested.

although there seems to be a black hole where the pictures and reminiscences

Further to the story by J.R.Y.(A.K.A
Fungus)my recollections of the story about the accumulators and the fire
differ in respect of motive.(although I think it occurred in 1963 so I
may be a little mixed up). As I understand it J.R.Y., Mel Heald and others
connected the accumulators and rheostats in order to make an electric chair
from one of the old metal and canvas chairs.I also believe that they attempted
to"persuade" one Peter? Scott to test it out. The result of this "scientific
" experiment was that "Harry" separated these would-be executioners and
isolated them into a"high security" registration group called "Delta 4A"
based in the library! Not a clever move! It was like turning the library
into Parkhurst -or should that be Rampton!

I could never get the hang of these
computer things; what I wanted to say, before I pressed the wrong button
in my previous message was congratulations to Alan for his wonderful new
website and hello to all my old school chums, but more especially to deny
the foul rumours extant in 1963 that I set fire to the Physics Lab (P1)
on purpose. It was an accident – honestly – Mel Heald will back me up!
What really happened was that it was a very cold winter’s day and we connected
all the accumulators and rheoststats together to create a bit of warmth
and – well the next thing was that the lab bench just seemed to be on fire.
It was only one end of the wretched bench actually! “Harry” (Mr Harvatt)
seemed to believe me at the time. Since then however, my nephew, Daniel
Riddington Young, who still lives in Sheffield has evidently met someone
who asked him if he was any relation to the arsonist R.Y. who burned down
the CGS Chemistry labs (note the plural) in the 50s. So much for “Omnes
Amici”! I hope this clears the matter up once and for all!

from the www.omnesamici.co.uk website. J.S. Robinson taught at the school
from 1944 to 1947Mr. Robinson In December, Mr. Robinson left us to take
up the post of Senior Science Master at the Hemel Hempstead Grammar School.
He came to Sheffield in the spring of 1944 and into this comparatively
short time he has crammed a remarkable amount of activity and he has left
his mark on many aspects of School life. There is no need to remind readers
of the Holly Leaf of the hard work he as done as business manager since
the critical time when the magazine was revived in particularly difficult
circumstances. He readily accepted the responsibility of arranging the
Christmas parties and, in co-operation with Mr. McIver, he undertook the
reorganization of the boys' dining arrangements. When we consider that,
at the same time, a thorough reorganisation of the Physics course throughout
the School has been undertaken, it is doubly surprising that Mr. Robinson
could always find time to help with special socials and other activities.
Old students often express their appreciation of the extremely effective
training in Physics which they received under Mr. Robinson. Zulu-Rivelin
will be sorry to lose an enthusiastic Housemaster. Finally, we are grateful
for the way in which his skill as a photographer has been placed at the
service of the School and has provided records of many School functions.
From the time of his arrival, Mr. Robinson has expressed himself eloquently
in praise of all things (or nearly all) connected with Sheffield and the
School. It began with the policeman whom he met near the station on the
day of his arrival. The School will miss his drive and enthusiasm, and
the Staff will miss his subtle humour, but we know his heart is in the
London district and we wish him happiness in his new post. Alan Lomaxwww.omnesamici.co.uk

A Big Hello to all old friends,
please note a new email address as I have now taken early retirement from
the railway after 33 years service. However the idle life only lasted
for a few weeks before I started work as a car delivery driver, I now get
to drive a great variety of different vehicles from new to several years
old with free fuel and even get paid as well. So if you see a white
haired and bearded wreck at the side of the road with Trade Plates, the
red and white number plates, hitching a lift you never know it might be
me.Very saddened to hear that we have lost Megan, I was looking forward
to seeing her at one of the reunions.Be seeing you all as soon as I can

To Jaspar Utley Thank you
for taking the trouble to advise us all about the sad loss of your wife,
Megan Croxen on the 4th January. It is indeed a blow to us and I am sure
that I speak on behalf of all of us in Megan's year at City Grammar School
that our very deepest sympathy goes to yourself, and also to your two Daughters
Rebecca and Rachel. Whilst we do not know you any of you personally, we
feel that due to Megan's efforts to write to the omnesamici website about
her life since leaving school that we have become to know quite a bit about
you all. Megan was the life and sole of the school and since we have all
met up again after all these years, fully expected Megan to just turn up
one day at one of our reunions. We have all talked about her both before
she "found" us and since, saying how vibrant she was at school. Megan was
not only clever, but attractive and a lovely personality and willingly
joined in any activity that was going. Megan had everything! I just thought
that you ought to know this. Tomorrow a small number of us from Megan's
year will be lunching together in Sheffield and it goes without saying
that a toast will be made to a very dear absent friend.Should you have
to visit Sheffield anytime, please do take the trouble to tell us beforehand
as I am sure that we would all like to meet you.Yours sincerely,Philip

MEGAN CROXEN (UTLEY)Deepest sympathy
to Jaspar/family and sincere condolences on the death of Megan. Everone
at City Grammar loved Megan. I last saw and spoke to her, very briefly,
in the 1960s when we passed each other on the escalators at St Pancras

I was on the way to see friends in London. This sad news is utterly devastating.

Christmas and New Year greetings
from the Omnes Amici Website.2004 has seen a major increase in the amount
of material that has beenposted to the web site and all of it contributed
by former pupils andstaff. There are almost 1000 pages of photographs and
articles coveringa wide range of activities in, and out of, school. There
are a couple of missing items that are of particular interest andif you
can help in providing information or copies for the web site itwould be
most helpful :-1970 copy of the HOLLY LEAF1971 School Production - A MAN
FOR ALL SEASONS1966 School Production - DIARY OF ANNE FRANK1964 School
Production - TRIAL BY JURY1958 School Production - ????????????????1947
School Production - IOLANTHE1943 School Production - THE BISHOP'S CANDLESTICKSDetails
of the School Productions can be found at :-http://www.omnesamici.co.uk/CGSplaysandChoral.htmlIf
you have the time please look at the all the photographs listed foryour
period at the school and see if you can fill in some of the namesthat are
still missing. Many former colleagues have been in touch this and a comprehensive
listof all those that can be contactedcan be found at :- http://www.omnesamici.co.uk/CGSfriendsRegister.htmlIf
you want to contact any of them please let me know. This year has seen a
spate of reunions for the various intake years andeveryone seems to have
enjoyed themselves so much that more are plannedmore next year. Details
of these and photographs from past reunions canbe found at :- http://www.omnesamici.co.uk/schooldayREUNIONS.htmlIt
has been proposed by many colleagues that a former pupils association(along
similar lines to the HOLLY GUILD) should be formed and it isenvisaged that
THE PHOENIX ASSOCIATION will get off the ground sometimeearly next year.
Details and updates will posted regularly on :-http://thephoenixassociation.co.ukThe
fastest growing section this year has been the memorabilia pageswhere former
pupils have kindly sent in many, many items from bus passesto prefects
badges. If you have ANYTHING of interest that is associatedwith the school
please send it for inclusion. The memorabilia pages canbe found at :-http://www.omnesamici.co.uk/schooldaymemorabilia.htmlAnother
popular item this year has been individual memories and if youwish to recall
some of your experiences of life at City Grammar thenplease do put pen
to paper (or E-Mail) and we will be glad to includethem in the memories
section which can be found at :-http://www.omnesamici.co.uk/CGSmemories.htmlThe
reunions have provided many opportunities to photograph formerpupils for
inclusion in the ever popular "THEN and NOW" section. If youhave been lucky
enough to escape this ordeal then please considersending in a recent photograph
of yourself so that you can join the clubat :-http://www.omnesamici.co.uk/schoolTHENandNOW.htmlFinally,
if you are in contact with other former pupils I would beobliged if you
would forward this message on to them - if you know offormer students of

Help wanted please about my father.Any
information about Colin Vaughan who attended Sheff Central Secondary School
from 1928 to 1934. He went on to become an internationally known Chess
Problemist and I would like any information about his schooling and early
chess. A quote from his records reads......"in my 6th year at school I
became unbeatable, even by the teacher who ran the weekly chess club. I
played first board in the chess team against other local schools......a
notable success was in a home match against Woodhouse Grammar".Are there
any records of this chess club, or the teacher who ran it, or any other
chess records of who he played for and where, after he left school and
went into the research lab of a large Sheffield Steel Works and studied
at night school for about 8 years to get his Sheffield Uni degree in Metallurgy?
I believe that the nightschool may have been at Abbeydale Road School.

Any City Grammar ex-pupil interested
in sponsoring my mad escapadeIn January, at nearly 67, in the old tradition
of City Grasmmar,I will attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
Starting off on the lower rain forested slopes, I will spend seven days
slowly climbing and acclimatising, making my way to the glazier covered
summit at 19,340 ft.Every foot of the mountain I climb, every blister I
get, every shallow breath I puff and every degree below zero that I can
endure at night will be worth all the effort because I will be putting
myself through it all in aid the Cavendish Centre and the Macmillan Cancer
Relief. I know from personal experience what a wonderful service
both these organisations provide to cancer sufferers and their families
and really what I am doing is very minor compared to the challenge cancer
sufferers face each day. We are all working towards the day when
everyone will have ready access to information, treatment and care for
cancer. If you feel you can support me for either of these organisations
please drop me a cheque made payable to The Cavendish Centre or The Macmillan
Cancer Relief, to my home address 9 Swanbourne Road Sheffield S5

His wife was also there and she was actually teaching at My old junior
School (Walkley) when I was there. he has just told me that one of his
extra-curricular activities was to deliver notes from Mr Goodfellow to
his young lady in Norton. Anybody know who she was?Mr Walker also taught
at greenhill SChool in the pre-and post war periods and was latterly at
Brook Shool until retirement in 1970sAnybody remember him from those days?

absent for all theposed photos so I don't have to cringe like someof you
lot!I've lived in the US since 1967 and was last inSheffield when my then-fiance
Jim and I stayedfor three days on the way to Edinburgh to bemarried on
Hogmanay, 1986. (Because Jim is veryabsent-minded and I wanted to
be sure he wouldremember our anniversary. It works.) My father
was landlord of the Prince of Wales onDivision Street until we moved to
Walkley in1955--we'll say no more about the transformationof the pub, although
the "Roger and Out" lived upto its reputation! The rest of the time
was verypleasantly spent in a "show and tell" tour forJim, including the
old school, of course. Ishowed Jim the moors (where I used to ride
quitea bit) and dragged him down a lead mine inCastleton! The US
may have its awe-inspiringGrand Canyon and soaring Rocky Mountains but
ithas nothing to compare with the moors on afreezing grey day with rain
like sharp needlesflying horizontally!Who would have thought I'd end up
here in aCharleston suburb, looking out at tropicalflowers, palm trees
and Spanish moss-draped oaktrees, complaining about the heat and humidity(described
by the local met guy as"armor-piercing"), wondering if we'll get ahurricane
this year and have to worry aboutalligators from the nearby reservoir washing
upon the garden! Yes, it's definitely a long way from Fef'sclassroom
all those years ago, and I'd be happyto hear from anyone who remembers
me.Best to all,Hilary

Thoroughly enjoyed todays monthly
reunion lunch for the Class of '54 (to '59/'61) The number who now turn
up each month is slowly growing ... 12 today, and this didn't include two
of the regulars who would normally attend. We meet on the 2nd Thursday
of each month at Noon upstairs in Wetherspoons which is opposite the top
side entrance to Cole Bros. in Cambridge Street. (sorry, now John Lewis's,
all these changes, it's difficult for us oldies to keep up) The 12 today
included(in no particular order) :- Chris Brown,"the Elder", Val Duckworth,
Sandra Day, Jeanette Attwood (Aston) & Eric Aston, Mary Anderson, Ann
Marriott, Barbara Pagdin, Anne Breakwell, Bernard Cooper, Joan Martin,
(who was very apprehensive as it was her first reunion since school, but
thoroughly enjoyed it), and myself.Make a date in your diary for next month.
No need to book, just turn up.Keep up the good work Alan, it's you we all
have to thank for providing us with the facility of putting us in touch
with one another.Kind Regards to all.

Hi Everyone,It's that annoying
secretary again - First of all A BIG THANK YOU to all of you that
have contributed in any way to the Reunion - just by getting in touch with
Chris or Philip or myself, however briefly, or by actually attending last
Saturday and making the evening such a success, I really, really enjoyed
it so much. I also enjoyed reading everyone's "autobiography"
and that brings me to my next point - how much more information do
you want from us (me)? If you were at the "DO" you will have
received a copy of the Who's Who, but I also have a list of Contact Details
for almost everyone we have "discovered", could you contact me if you would
like a copy (stating email or snail mail preference) please. If you weren't
at the DO, perhaps you could let me know if you want to receive YOUR copy
of the Who's Who by email or snail mail and also whether you would also
like a copy of the Contact List. Those of you who have seen the Who's Who
and would like to alter/update/ or withdraw their entry, please let ME
know that also. Trying to cover every eventuality, some
people were actually late in handing in their "homework" (nothing new there
then!) and if you would like a copy of the (up to now) COMPLETE Who's Who
by email, also please get back to me. You've already heard from Chris that
we hope to do this on an annual basis from now on, I'm all in favour and
will keep the Who's Who going with that in mind, so the above paragraph
is particularly important for those of you who didn't hand in their homework
at all! Once again many many thanks to all of you - I so enjoyed seeing
you all or hearing from you and it made me feel good to think we had put
so many of you in touch with YOUR old friends from school. I look forward
to hearing from ALL of you soon,Luv, Val (Valerie Duckworth)

the small band of private investigators working on the case have tracked
down Ann Marriott, Janet Oscroft, Kay Clarke, Linda Clayton, Janet Turner,
Megan Croxon & John Melvin which now makes a total to date of 42 who
will be attending plus many spouses / partners. Only a further 101 to find

in on google the name of my best schoolfriend, Dennis Scorah. I later
found other sites for the school, including two photos, one of our teachers
and one of Mr. Thompson (our Latin teacher)'s rambling party in front of
the youth hostel at Hawick. I recognized many people on the photo
(including myself). Fond memories. I came to America just 50

I'm sitting bored in my office,
it's 31C outside and I came across this site entirely by accident. I was
blown over by the content and the memories it brought back.I was at the
school from 1966 to 1973. I went to Durham University, and then Aston
University until '79. After moving and working around in different
places I came back and worked in the Economic Development Department of
the Council from '84 to '92. I then went to South Africa (for a year,
but never came back). I'm married, and have an 8 year old daughter.
I now run a development consultancy working on international aid projects
across Africa. People I remember from school are Alan Broadhead, Paddy
Gaynor, Mick Hutchinson, Ray Potts, Phil Butterworth, Alan Phillips, Dave
Warhurst, Kath Kavanagh, Janet Crowe. It's been a long time, but
if anyone's out there feel free to drop me a line.

email Mel and the email address was incorrect - nice to hear from him if
he's still living! (My email address is: paul@upperdenby.org.uk and website:
http://www.upperdenby.org.uk)2. The names Newsome and Lockwood are probably
mostly derived from locations in the Huddersfield area of Southwest Yorkshire.
I know a lot of people from that area (living as I do about 16 miles north
of Sheffield and 10 miles south of Huddersfield). Lockwood is a very common
name round here and there's an inner-city suburb of Huddersfield called
Lockwood (also a railway station of the same name). The Lockwoods I know
are intensely musical people (does this help the enquirer from the USA)?
Newsome is also a quite common name - again Newsome is an inner-city suburb
of Huddersfield and I'd guess that many people having the name Newsome
originally came from the Huddersfield area. The man to contact if you want
any information on the origin of surnames in the UK is Professor David
Hey of Sheffield University. He's pubished various books on the topic and
is a prominent local historian. A web search will find him. I've enjoyed
many a lecture given by him - a local man, from a humble background near
Penistone, a few miles from my home, and still very down-to-earth and approachable!

I have searched these pages for
the past 6 months and find them wonderfully compelling. What a great time
. I'm pleased to see the messages from David Connley and the recent one
from Mike Earnshaw.I had to smile when the new page appeared for the 1954
Speech Day at the Victoria Hall.Does anyone remember the one or was it
a choral concert by the school at the City Hall around 1956 0r 1957
.During the rehearsals for the day , several of the lads voices were breaking
and I remember Miss Rolfe was taking the rehearsal. The ensuing noise was
so bad she called for Mr Taylor who soon found out the culprits (me included)
but we had already been allocated our places. I well remember sitting in
the City Hall to the left of the organ - presumably to drown out any noise
- with a member of staff at the end of the row and the instructions that
we had to mouth the words but under no circumstances were we to sing !
Can anyone else remember this ? Regards all.

My son found this site straight
away from Google. I was at City Grammar from 1937 to 1944 and the site
was very different then - all black from the coal pollution and during
the war. I thoroughly enjoyed being there and am delighted to see all this
information on the web-site.

I was very sorry to learn of the
death of Bernard Fuller - see recent announcement. He was one of the very
best teachers at City Grammar in the good old Orchard Lane days. His genuine
enthusiasm for modern languages was infectious and he was one of the people
who made my time at City Grammar both a pleasure and a privilege. I can
still remember some of his lessons quite clearly. Had him as form master
when in class 4A (1957-8).He really enjoyed teaching and he clearly liked
the children he taught. He lost a leg in WW2 and was clearly a courageous
man. His disability was barely noticeable (I remember marvelling at how
well he danced). One wonders whether such excellet teachers still exist
nowadays. Does anybody have any further information about Bernard
Fuller (where he went after CGS, what he did in retirement, etc.)? He lived
on Rupert Road, Nether Edge, I think - whilst at CGS.Regards to all.Paul
Clarke (1954-1961)PS. This may sound odd, but I still view the time spent
at City Grammar as just about the best and happiest days of my life (mustn't
say any more, in case my wife and family read this and are highly offended)!

near Rother Valley. Bob Harper is our local parish councillor and I think
still works for BT. Apparently Martin Whittaker lives in my village, but
I've never seen him, perhaps I would not recognise him. Andrew Brown also
lives in the Village. I think he has a picture of Dorian Grey in the loft.
He has not changed or apparently aged. He was instantly recognisable.

What a fantastic night we 49ers
had on Friday. A great big thank you to Jean and her friends for organising
the reunion. There must have been a lot of hard work involved. The venue
was just right; the buffet delicious; the atmosphere very friendly and
the name labels & word sheets were very impressive. It's hard to imagine
that almost half a century has passed since many of us last met. A lot
of water has flowed under many bridges and in many diverse directions. It
was wonderful to meet and talk with Miss Thorold and Mr Curtis. Thank you
again Jean for having the idea and seeing it all come to fruition.

G'day Alan (and all you other wonderful
bald, wrinkled geriatric old farts),What a magic web-site, I stumbled upon
it in the early hours of yesterday. I was all geared up to do some comet
spotting when the clouds rolled in. Sleep wasn't an option so I tried a
Google Search to see if any of my relatives had done anything memorable
(or otherwise) that I wasn't aware of.Scanning down the result set was
one which included Roger Brown, Roy Cutts, Roger Naylor, Richard Weston,
Geof Vintin. It didn't connect at first, I just thought bugger me, what
a coincidence, in a previous life I went to school with guys with similar
names. Then it hit me, I mean really hit me. I've been through all the photographs
(and unashamedly the whole spectrum of emotions). I guess this sort of
thing affects ex-pats the most. I left heffield in 1972 and have been travelling
ever since. I've worked in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Papua
New Guinea, Fiji, New Caledonia and I thought that I had forgotten my roots.
Finding your web-site was like a bungee cord around my testicles which
snapped me back 40 years. It's amazing how 7 years of City Grammar are
so deeply ingrained and how clicking the appropriate button can bring all
those memories flooding back. Does anyone remember the REAL school song
"I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles", sung incoherently in The Athol to the accompaniment
of Norman at the piano after copious amounts of Black Velvet and Rum and
Blackcurrant ? (It wouldn't surprise me if no-one does, I had great difficulty
remembering anything that happened in the Athol on the morning after).Love
and best wishes to everyone.Roy.p.s. I've enclosed a recent mug-shot for
the rogues gallery.

The website gets better and better!
I wonder if anyone is in touch with any former teachers as it occurs to
me that some of them might have taken photos when we left the building.
I recognise the photos of Dianne and me in Paris, as I have copies.
We are now in touch again after 33 years. Anyway keep it up, it's great!
Joyce

Hope to be able to fill in some
of the staff names from the 1955 picture shortly. Can't find any
photo of my class. I was in 3A in 1955/56 - I can perhaps let you
have some photos of hockey/rounders teams etc.
