Mel Heald
I was born in South Yorkshire
on the edge of the Dark Peak National Park and
grew in wide open spaces of
Brontean proportions. I went on to read Economics
at the University and also took
a Music degree in London.
I spent a dozen or so years playing
and teaching classical guitar and other areas
of music. During this time I
also taught myself the art of fine cabinet making and
abandoned music to earn my living
at this (then) lucrative trade. I became
interested in the sculptural
aspect of furniture, including carving and other applied
decoration. This was so facinating
to me that I concentrated more and more on it
and eventually moved on to other
materials.
